Clay Tiles and Cylinders

All Levels
Studio
5 Day Class (9am-4pm)
Tuition: $265 (includes lab fee)
Materials: $50

The class will focus on the making of tiles and cylinders using simple forms supplied by the instructor. A cylinder is a tile rolled up. It is the intent of the instructor to explore the possibilities of these simple forms as architectural elements, as well as decorative elements in their own right. With the use of a slab roller to extrude clay to a desired thickness, students with no prior clay experience will be able to produce and decorate pieces using decorating techniques already perfected by the instructor. In the short time allotted for the class, it will be possible for everyone to produce something for a kiln fire, and a subsequent pit fire. With the addition of a base and possibly a handle, these cylinders could become a vessel ( vase, cup, or pitcher, to name a few). The tiles are decorative elements in their own right, and with simple manipulation can be formed into a variety of other shapes. The possibilities are really quite endless.

Mark has a BFA degree from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. He has been both a potter and a woodworker for over thirty years. He is currently working on a commission through Wal-Mart Pharmacy to produce a series of pieces to be presented as awards to outstanding pharmacy students who display exemplary behavior and great potential as community pharmacist candidates, the RESPy ( Respect, Excellence, and Service in Pharmacy) national award program. Mark is currently exhibiting at the River Market Artspace in Little Rock, Enigma Gallery in Fayetteville, and Quicksilver Gallery in Eureka Springs.
