All Levels
Outdoors
5 Day Class (9am-4pm)
Tuition: $265 (includes lab fee)
Materials: $50

Traditional craftsmen know that working wood straight from the fresh cut tree or log with hand tools, is a quick, practical, and efficient method of making chairs, bowls, spoons and other implements needed around the homestead.

This course is designed to introduce the student to basic Green Woodworking tools, techniques, wood structure (especially in dealing with shrinkage), and will offer suggestions for choosing the best wood species for the job at hand. Areas covered: Splitting, riving, shaving, shaping, and simple "functional" carving. Projects may include: a simple post and rung stool, spoons & other tree ware, and/or tool handles.

Joe Doster has a Bachelor of Science in Education and an Industrial Education degree from the University of Central Arkansas, Conway, 1977. In 2005 he received a Master of Education/ Vocational Education degree from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. Joe currently makes his living as an Instructor at North Arkansas College in the areas of Computer Aided Design and Geographic Information Systems, teaching an occasional Wood Technology Class. He previously taught Vocational Furniture Manufacturing and CAD at area high schools. Before entering the teaching field Doster made his living as a furniture maker and craftsman specializing in Butcher Blocks, cutting boards, and tree ware. A member of the Arkansas Craft Guild since 1985, Doster has won numerous awards at juried regional and national craft and fine art shows. Among his awards are: First Place Governor's Award - Arkansas Arts Crafts and Design Fair, and Artist's Choice Award - Eureka Spring Guild of Artists and Craftsmen Fall Show.
