Session Nine/August 4-8

Terry Russell
Ceramics-Effigy Pots

Studio
5 Day class (9am-4pm)
Tuition: $275
Materials: $25

This class will construct pottery with Native American or primitive techniques of hand building. Students will also learn to burnish, using river stones and making brushes of the yucca plant. This will be used to paint designs on the pottery forms. The pottery will be fired in a barrel using sawdust as a fuel.

Terry Russell, and his wife Sara, own and operate Blue Moon Studio in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. He is noted for both his pottery and his paintings. For many years, Terry has taught art at Eureka Springs High School. He recently received a grant from the Smithsonian Institute to enable his students to study the effigy pots of the ancient Indian tribes of Northwest Arkansas. Students designed their own effigy pots with clay from local caves and created their own hand tools from nature. A successful exhibit of these works was held at both Iris at the Basin Park and the Carnegie Public Library.
