Session Four/June 23-27

Joe Doster
Green Woodworking/Chair making

Intermediate
Studio
5 Day class (9am-4pm)
Tuition: $275
Materials: $50

This course will cover the basic hand tool processes required to create a rustic post and rung chair from the log. This will be a foundation course in hand tool woodworking and a continuation of Joe's earlier class on introduction to green woodworking. Students will learn to split, rive, and shape chair parts with drawknife and spoke shave, and then assemble them into a strong ladder-back. Most students will be able to complete a chair frame learning to steam bend parts and finish the chair with hickory bark seat weaving.

Joe Doster from Harrison, Arkansas, has a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Education from the University of Central Arkansas and Master of Vocational Education degree from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. Joe currently makes his living as an instructor at North Arkansas College in the areas of Computer Aided Design and Geographic Information Systems, teaching an occasional class in Wood Technology. He previously taught Vocational Furniture Manufacturing and CAD at area high schools. Before entering the teaching field, Joe made his living as a furniture maker and craftsman specializing in butcher blocks, cutting boards and treen ware. A member of the Arkansas Craft Guild since 1985, Joe currently serves as President of the Education and Support Association arm of the Guild. He has won numerous awards at juried regional and national craft and fine art shows. Among his awards are: First Place Governor's Award - Arkansas Arts, Crafts and Design Fair, and Artist's Choice Award - Eureka Springs Guild of Artists and Craftsmen Fall Show.
